Describe a character from the book. Say why you like / dislike the character.

Arthur Birling is the head of the Birling family. He's a wealthy factory owner. As an intelligent "selfmade man" he believes that every person must take care of himself first. The book, however, shows that Birling isn't as clever as he thinks he is. Mr. Birling points out in the play opposite Gerald that he expects to become a knight soon and is therefore very keen on a good public image of his surroundings.

I don’t really like Arthur Birling. He’s quite rough with everyone and can’t feel with other people. The fact that he wants Gerald to marry his daughter, only because Gerald’s father is one of his rivals, confirms my image of him. He only thinks of himself and of his family’s wealth at all costs. And even if one of his family members, for example Eric, disappoints him, he gets really angry and is ashamed of him.

For me, Arthur Birling is an unsympathetic, self-oriented and money-addicted human.

  1. When posting, check that everything can be read. The question seems to be written in white? And I can't see it over the white background.

Write down your first impressions of the book or play. Ask some questions. Write down quotations. Copy whole passages that are difficult or that you really like a lot. The first pages come along with a boring but how ever still exciting mood. I was quite surprised when i realized that the whole story plays in a single dining-room of a suburban house. I couldn't imagine how one can write like 120 pages only about a family sitting in a room. But after some pages, and surely when the inspector joined the story, it was really interesting. I like how the book is written. It's unique writing style fascinates me in multiple ways. In general, I don't read many books. But with reading this book, I'm getting motivated for others and I can imagine that I'd read another book in the next days. I didn't find any hard passages so here's one that's rather difficult: Birling : Yes, of course. ( clears his throat. ) well, Gerald, I know you agreed that we shou...

In your own words what has happened in the book? At any point in the story, retell the major details of the story's plot so far.  The Birling family and Gerald Croft, the lover of Sheila Birling, sit together in an evening. They're talking about Sheila and Gerald because they're getting married. Gerald's father and Mr. Birling were rivals in the business, but they've been working together since Gerald and Sheila have been together. Gerald's giving Sheila a ring. Afterwards a discussion about war and the behaviour of the "today's" generation begins. Eric, Sheila and Sybil Birling went to another room to talk about the clothes for the wedding. Gerald and Arthur are sitting in the dining room and Arthur says he has a good chance of making the Honours List (list of important guests at the Queen's birthday party). He hopes to gain the knighthood. He admonishes Gerald not to allow himself a scandal. Eric comes back to the dining room and the doorbe...
